How does a microencapsulated fire patch work?
A fire patch contains a clean agent (typically FK-5-1-12, also known as Novec 1230) microencapsulated in a polymer matrix. When the ambient temperature reaches the activation threshold (commonly 170°C), the capsules rupture and release the agent as a gas, which displaces oxygen and chemically interrupts the combustion chain reaction inside the enclosure.
What equipment is suitable for passive fire patches?
Fire patches are ideal for enclosed electrical and electronic equipment: server racks, battery cabinets, electrical panels, control cabinets, telecom shelters, EV charging pedestals, solar inverters, UPS cabinets, and small machinery enclosures. The key requirement is that the equipment be enclosed — the agent needs a contained volume to reach effective concentration.
What is the service life of a fire patch?
Microencapsulated fire patches have a rated service life of 10 years under normal operating conditions. They require no maintenance during this period. After 10 years, patches should be replaced to ensure reliable activation.
Do fire patches leave residue?
No. FK-5-1-12 (Novec 1230) is a clean agent that vaporizes completely, leaving zero residue on equipment. This is a key advantage over dry powder extinguishers, which can cause significant damage to electronics.
